What does a tent frame have in common with your skeleton? Using practical comparisons, students will understand the importance and purpose of the Skeletal and Muscular systems. By blending live action with animation, kids will see bones move and muscles contract. Colorful animations expose the living bone -- down to the marrow. They'll peek inside a vein and see smooth muscle contract. Young talent demonstrate the interdependence of these systems and tell some of the secrets that make these two body systems...amazing!

Learn the parts of our skeletal system and our muscular system and how they work together to give shape and movement to our bodies, including form and movement inside our bodies!

  1. Students will understand that tissues make up different systems in our bodies that perform different functions for our bodies to live.
  2. Students will understand that the skeletal system is the frame that gives shape, protects body systems and allows for movement.
    1. The main bones of a human skeleton are: skull, clavicle, ribs, humerus, radius, ulna, vertebrae, pelvis, femur, patella, fibula, tibia.
    2. There are 206 bones in the adult skeleton.
    3. The shape of a bone is related to its job in the body.
    4. Bones are living tissues that make red and white bloods cells.
  3. Students will understand that joints and connective tissue allow skeletons to move.
    1. There are 3 types of joints: immovable, partially movable, movable.
    2. There are 2 types of connective tissue: cartilage and ligaments.
  4. Students will understand that eating well and exercising will help bones grow strong and stay healthy.
    1. Healthy foods are full of vitamins and minerals that help bones grow new cells.
  5. Students will understand that muscles help us move, move around and move things inside us. Muscles also protect our vital organs and help us maintain our body temperature.
    1. There are 2 groups of muscles: voluntary and involuntary.
    2. Skeletal muscles are voluntary and move our bodies.
      i) The main skeletal muscles are: biceps, triceps, abdominals, back extensors, quadriceps and hamstrings.
      ii) Skeletal muscles move bones by contracting and relaxing.
    3. Cardiac muscles are special involuntary muscles in the heart.
    4. Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles that line organs and blood vessels that move things throughout the body.
  6. Students will understand that staying healthy is important.
    1. Exercise helps your skeletal and cardiac muscles stay strong.
    2. Nutritional food choices keep your smooth muscles working right.
