Children learn that by acting properly on the playground equipment they will have more fun and reduce injuries. Children learn playground rules—using equipment for its designed purpose, taking turns, what to do when approached by strangers, and what to do if someone is injured.

Avoid danger when you're at the playground by following the rules.

  1. Students will understand that following the rules makes the playground a safe place to for students to enjoy their recess.
  2. Students will realize that students who wish to play during recess should wear clothes that fit correctly; this will prevent them from tripping, choking, or getting caught in the playground equipment. Shirts should be tucked in, shoelaces should be tied, and loose pants should be kept up with a belt. Also, students should avoid wearing necklaces, which can cause a person to choke, or earrings, which can get caught on the equipment.
    1. Make sure that the pieces of playground equipment are used in the way they are intended; this will help prevent bodily injury.
    2. When using the swing-set, it is important to remember that leaning back too far or jumping off the swing while it is in motion is very dangerous. Also, a student should never walk too close to the swing-set while others are using it; this will prevent a collision.
    3. Students should climb only on playground equipment meant for climbing, and once they are finished, students should slowly climb down and not jump off the equipment.
  3. Students will understand a slide can be dangerous, so students must remember to take turns, sit up straight, and only slide feet first.
  4. Students will know when playing with others, students must remember to take turns (share) and play fairly. If a student refuses to share or play fairly, other students should find something else to do in order to avoid a major problem. If a student wants to pick, a fight with another student, the other student should walk away and avoid fighting. Also, if a student sees others involved in a fight, he or she should tell a teacher and not try to stop the fight.
  5. Students will know to be aware of strangers and other dangers on the school campus.
    1. Students must watch out for strangers, because adults they don't know could mean trouble. If a stranger wants to talk or play with a student, the student should run to a teacher and tell them about the problem. Since some strangers will pick on kids who are alone, students should play in groups and be in a place where a teacher can see them. Also, a student should never go with a stranger, even if the stranger knows the student's name.
    2. Since strange animals can pose a danger to people, students should stay away from any animal that wanders onto the playground.
    3. Weapons or drugs can pose a real danger to every person on the school campus; therefore, any person who sees weapons or drugs on the school campus should report the problem to a teacher.
  6. Students will realize that when an emergency bell rings, whether it is a true emergency or just a drill, students must stay in groups, be quiet and listen to instructions, and be where an adult can see them. Also, students must follow the school's safety plan. If a student does not know the safety plan, he or she should ask a teacher.
  7. Students will understand that true emergencies can occur on the playground and know how to react to them.
    1. In the event of a fire on the playground, students should tell an adult and stand away from the conflagration.
    2. If a student is injured on the playground, the student should not be moved, because he or she may not be able to walk; instead, a teacher should be informed of the emergency.
  8. Students should be able to answer "yes" to all of these questions:
    1. "Am I playing safely?"
    2. "Am I playing fairly?"
    3. "Am I playing where a grown-up can see me?"

  1. Before viewing the video

    1. Ask the students to tell about all the equipment on their school playground. Does anyone have a neighborhood playground? What equipment is there? Have there ever been any problems on the playground? Why? What did the student do? After watching this video, the class can discuss these questions again.
  2. After viewing the video

    1. Playing Simon Says: Select a good reader to be Simon. Using the following statements, have the class stand up if what Simon says is true and not stand if it is false. If there is a conflict, have a class discussion as to why the students disagree.
      i) Be a good sport
      ii) Wear long necklaces on the playground
      iii) Jump off the swings
      iv) Give everyone a turn
      v) Stand in the street if you hear an emergency signal
      vi) Go down the slide head first
      vii) Pick a fight if you do not win a game
      viii) Walk away from a fight
      ix) Tell a grown-up if someone has a gun, knife, or drugs.
      x) A stranger is only someone who looks mean ugly
      xi) A stranger is anyone that you do not know
      xii) It's O.K. to tell an adult when there is a problem
      xiii) Play fair and remember to share
      xiv) It is alright to get into a stranger's car
      xv) Do not pet strange animals even if they look friendly
      xvi) Play on the swings and slides when it is raining
