Models, Maps and More

Paul and his Science Pals

After a musical opening with Paul and his friends, Christine leads students in a fun filled pirate themed song that attaches the vocabulary terms to actions that reinforce the meaning of the words. When the music begins she leads them in singing and moving along with the vocabulary rich song. Next, two students, with guidance from their teacher, learn how paper and electronic maps help people find locations. During a field trip to their local park, the students research the distance between the park's features, and draw the landmarks to scale to build a map of their favorite place to play. In another lab activity, with the help from their teacher, two different students create models with frosting and graham crackers to demonstrate how the movement of tectonic plates can change the surface of the earth. Using the models, they show how volcanoes, mountains, and valleys can form, or cause earthquakes.
