Lewis and Clark

Students travel with Lewis and Clark and experience how these explorers survived without the tools of civilization? They witness how these adventurers learned to tan hides, make bullets, candles and other necessities needed to survive this epic journey.

Find out why President Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the West.

  1. Students will understand the reason for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
  2. Students will see the Lewis and Clark Expedition reenacted.
  3. Students will learn about the resources and tools used by the Corps of Discovery to survive their journey.
  4. Students will understand the help given to the Lewis and Clark Expedition by several Native American groups.

  1. Create your own expedition. After viewing the program, ask students to imagine themselves as explorers. Where would they want to go? What would they bring with them? Ask each student to write a journal, make a supply list, and provide maps and journal entries about the details of their expedition. Encourage students to use illustrations and other creative outlets to make their journal unique.
  2. What if? After viewing the program, ask your students to consider what might have happened to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, had they not been aided by several groups of Native Americans. Ask students to write a comprehensive essay considering all of the possible alternatives and outcomes of the Expedition. Discuss these outcomes as a class.
